How PayPal fees work in the US

Every commercial payment costs a percentage of the amount received plus, for most payment types, a fixed fee per payment. The percentage depends on how the buyer paid, not on what you sold. If the payer is outside the US, 1.50% is added to the percentage. If the money has to be converted to another currency, PayPal applies its conversion margin on top.

Payment type (domestic)Fee
PayPal Checkout, guest checkout, Pay with Venmo3.49% + $0.49
Standard credit and debit card payments2.99% + $0.49
Send/receive money for Goods and Services2.99%
QR code transactions2.29% + $0.09
Invoice paid with PayPal or Venmo3.49% + $0.49
Invoice paid by card or Apple Pay2.99% + $0.49
Invoice paid by bank (ACH)1%, capped at $10.00
PayPal Pay Later4.99% + $0.49
Micropayments (approved accounts)4.99% + $0.09
Charity (pre-approved)1.99% + $0.49
International surcharge+1.50% on any of the above

Worked example

A buyer in Canada pays you $250.00 through PayPal Checkout. The rate is 3.49% plus the 1.50% international surcharge, so 4.99% of $250.00 is $12.48, plus the $0.49 fixed fee: $12.97 in fees and $237.03 received. If you then convert the money to Canadian dollars, PayPal takes a further 3.00% of the converted amount.

Other countries

PayPal publishes different rates for each country of the receiving account: United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have their own calculators.

Not covered here

  • Card-services products (Payments Pro, Advanced Card Payments, Virtual Terminal, Interchange Plus Plus) and alternative payment methods, which have their own rate cards on the same page.

  • Negotiated or volume rates.

Questions sellers ask

What is the PayPal fee for Goods and Services?
On the US merchant fee page updated 4 November 2026, money received for goods and services is listed at 2.99% with no fixed fee on that row. Payments that come through PayPal Checkout, guest checkout or Pay with Venmo are 3.49% plus $0.49, and card payments through standard checkout are 2.99% plus $0.49.
How much does PayPal take from $100?
For a $100 Goods and Services payment from a US payer, $2.99, leaving $97.01. Through PayPal Checkout it is $3.98, leaving $96.02. Add 1.50% if the payer is outside the US.
How much should I invoice to receive $100?
Type 100 in the 'I want to net' box and the calculator solves it: about $103.08 for a Goods and Services payment at 2.99%, or $104.14 for a checkout payment at 3.49% plus $0.49. The exact figure depends on the payment type you pick.
Are friends and family payments free?
Sending to friends and family in the US from a PayPal balance, bank account or PayPal debit card has no fee; funding it from a card costs 2.90% plus $0.30 to the sender, and international personal payments cost 5% with a $0.99 minimum and $4.99 maximum. Receiving a personal payment is free. Using friends and family for a sale breaks PayPal's rules and removes buyer and seller protection.
What is the currency conversion fee?
4.00% when paying in a currency other than the one listed, sending friends and family money in a different currency, or PayPal Payouts in a different currency; 3.00% for all other transactions that involve conversion.
What about chargebacks and disputes?
A chargeback costs $20.00 and a standard dispute $15.00 ($30.00 for high-volume dispute accounts). These are per event, not per sale, so they are not in the per-payment calculation.
